Application

Lightweight Constructions – Aircraft and Automotive

The measurements of the insulating properties of the coatings are useful in lightweight constructions in aircraft and automotive industry for avoidance of galvanic corrosion.

Avoidance of galvanic corrosion

The combination of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRC) with aluminium alloys in lightweight constructions forces the galvanic corrosion of the less noble aluminium. Other less noble alloys than carbon fibre will corrode as well in contact with CFRP. Galvanic corrosion occurs when noble and less noble materials are in electrical contact in wet or even humid environment. Therefore, the insulating coating on CFRP should be without any defects like pores, pinholes, scratches, etc.
With the CAMIP measuring device tiny, not visible defects (200 µm) in protecting, insulating coatings are detectable.

Furthermore, the resistance of the CFRP surface coating should have a high value in order to avoid galvanic corrosion.
With the TREMA measuring device the total resistance of the insulating coating can be determined with values between
< 106 Ω*cm2 and 1010 Ω*cm2.

Further application is the detection of failures and the quality control:

  • of Anodized surfaces
  • of Coatings
  • In principle every non-conductive coating on an electrical conductive substrate
